Creating a beautiful boutique closet often requires collaborating with an expert custom closet designer. Experienced designers are able to layer textures, incorporate unique materials, and solve challenges in order to transform dreams into reality.
Recently, Amy Mendez, a Closet Factory senior designer from Ft. Lauderdale, created a beautiful closet that was customized for a client that had a very tall and very narrow space with which to work. By collaborating closely with the client, Amy realized that one of the ways to overcome the space challenges was to incorporate a rolling ladder as part of the custom closet design. This way the storage capabilities could be greatly expanded while simultaneously improving accessibility.
“The funny thing is that everyone was telling me, ‘You’re never going to fit a rolling ladder in that space. But I was determined to make it work because I knew that was what the client really wanted. Accessing the higher space was the whole reason she wanted to redo her closet,” said Amy.

I did puck lighting to light up all of her beautiful handbags and clutches on the top; then I incorporated LED strip lighting going down the sides of all of the interior where her shoes are so it lights up all her shoes,” Amy Mendez.[/pullquote]Not only did Amy successfully create an elegant rolling ladder solution, she leveraged her interior design degree and deep experience as a custom closet designer to transform the narrow space into a gorgeous boutique walk-in closet look.
“Because it was a narrow, dark space, I wanted to keep it light, and give it a ‘pow’ factor that would pop with color,” said Amy.
To accomplish this, Amy chose to use white melamine inside all of the interior spaces in order to create contrast with both the edge band and the textured Naples finish of the cabinet fronts.
“And of course, we added lighting. I did a variety of lighting for that closet. I did puck lighting to light up all of her beautiful handbags and clutches on the top; then I incorporated LED strip lighting going down the sides of all of the interior where her shoes are so it lights up all her shoes,” said Amy.

One of the benefits of working closely with a custom closet designer like Amy is that her clients directly benefit from her ability to mix and layer finishes, textures, and hardware. For this special project, for example, Amy opted for simple, elegant, and modern silver metal hardware and combined the material with flat doors that had rounded corners which created a decorative look.
Because her client wanted to create a boutique feel, Amy used glass door fronts and glass shelves to showcase expensive handbags. This design strategy allowed the lighting elements to shine through each glass shelf and soften the overall look when entering the closet.
“It’s not just wood and melamine everywhere. You want to break it up with glass, you want to break it up with different textures. It really comes together once everything is put together in the right form,” said Amy.
After seeing the final result her custom closet designer created, Amy’s client was overjoyed with happiness. Not only did Amy’s design surpass her client’s expectations, but the newly designed custom closet also added more convenience and tranquility into her life.
“You know you think, ‘Oh, it’s just a closet. How can a closet really change someone’s life?’ But that’s thing she told me. She said, ‘You don’t understand how much easier it is to come here in the morning and get ready because everything has a place. Everything has a function. If I need to go up high to grab my bag, I’m not struggling to get to places like before.’ So yes, it completely changed her life with how she gets up in the morning and how much less stress she has,” said Amy.
