What makes a custom closet from Closet Factory special? More than you might think! Let’s follow a custom closet every step of the way as it goes from unique design to beautiful reality.
Often when looking for closet options you’ll find DIY products which list themselves as “custom.” When we talk about a custom closet company, we mean so much more than just being able to move shelves up and down. Rather than selling you a pre-made closet you hope you’ll like, a custom closet company will work with you to design a closet you know you’ll love. Starting with stock sheets and boards, a custom closet company will cut and install everything uniquely for the design you’ve created. Your custom closet designer will get to know you to create the perfect design for you.
Your closet begins with a thought, and that thought is different for everyone. It might be something about usability or aesthetic, but for one reason or many, you called a designer to help create a new closet.
The first step of the design process is to talk about what you want your new closet to achieve for you. This is where your originating thought comes in. This is the purpose of your new closet, and it should be the starting point of the design.
Next, its time to measure your space. Your designer will take complete measurements to ensure they know everything they can about how your future closet is shaped. It doesn’t matter how unusual the space is or what limitations it has, your designer will be able to work with the space that you have. That’s one of the many benefits of a truly custom closet!
Next you and your designer will take an inventory of your wardrobe to determine what the closet is going to need to store. This is a good time to talk about how you plan to keep your new closet organized, since you’ll probably have everything out anyways. We recommend organizing by item, by season, or by color.
Now you and your designer sit down together and start to create the layout for your closet. This is when those organizational plans get laid down on paper, and you’ll determine where shelves, cabinets, hanging rods, and anything else you can imagine might go.
You’ll pick your cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and molding to add texture to your look which can really incorporate your new cabinet seamlessly into your home. We always recommend incorporating lighting into your closet, because there’s nothing worse than building something beautiful and not being able to see it! Lighting and glass shelves are a great way of creating a display area in your closet.
Once the design is laid out, its time to get detailed. You’ll work with your designer to select materials and colors that match, complement, or contrast your home and wardrobe, including hardwood options like cherry and oak. This is also the time to choose your accessories to really make the space yours. Valet rods, jewelry drawers, and tilting laundry bins are just a few of the wide variety of stylish and functional accessories we offer.
Once you and your designer have decided on a final design, it is sent to the manufacturing team. We source our building materials
locally and cut it all to measure at your local Closet Factory. While we are a national company, your closet will be created locally by people who live in your community.
Every panel, shelf, and drawer that will be installed in your closet is touched by a Closet Factory sawblade. We use state-of-the-art
machinery and computers to cut your closet to precise specifications – down to fractions of an inch of precision. Once everything is cut precisely, initial assembly can begin.
Panels – the wall portions of your closet – then have holes bored into the interior side for shelves. There are two options which you would have picked from during the design process: either fully adjustable, with holes bored top to bottom, or custom boring, with holes only where your shelves will go.
Next, edge banding is applied to every exposed edge of your closet. This includes not only shelves and panels, but also drawers and cubbies. Speaking of drawers, Closet Factory uses a full box construction for drawers – meaning that your drawer is complete before we apply the front that you see. This makes for a much sturdier drawer than you have with three-side construction.
The quality of materials and workmanship is checked every step of the way, and if something isn’t right, it’s done again correctly before it gets on the truck to your home. Every piece of your closet is itemized and double-checked for accuracy.
Your installation team departs the factory the morning of your installation appointment – which you set earlier with your designer, on a
date and at a time which suits you best – carrying the materials and tools they will need for their day of work. Your installation team is prepared to make the final modifications to the materials to ensure that your closet fits exactly how it’s supposed to: just the way you dreamed it would.
Most designs are completed in a single day, but some require the installation team to be there for two or three days. No matter what, you can be assured of as swift an installation as is possible with the utmost care taken to ensure your design comes to life.
Of course, your new closet has to be installed in your home, and your installation team takes every precaution to make sure your home looks as beautiful after installation as before. We clean up before we go, and we make sure you’re satisfied before we leave.
If you’d like, your designer will come check in on your installation a few times to make sure everything is turning out the way it’s supposed to and to address any issues that might come up. Most of all they’re there to celebrate with you! This is the culmination of your work together, and our designers take pride in what they create.
Once your closet is installed, its time to move into it using the organization you and your designer worked out. Over time, as you get comfortable in your new space, getting dressed, selecting outfits, even just relaxing in your closet will be so much fun.
Thanks for coming with us as we followed a custom closet from first thought to final move in! We hope you’ve learned something about Closet Factory and what makes a custom closet so special.
