Go ahead – be excited for your first home office setup! There’s still a lot to be done, but in the end you’ll be escaping the monotonous structured atmosphere of a traditional workplace to work in your own personalized space at home.
Although you’ll be able to set your own schedule and get things done your way, your home office should be designed to help you achieve maximum productivity. Most people become too excited when setting up their workspace for the first time and have no idea what to add or where to put things. Luckily, we’ve compiled a list of helpful tips that can serve as a guide for your initial home office setup.
This goes without saying but you’ll need to choose a spot in your home that is most comfortable to you. Ideally, a good home office space should be both quiet and private. In this case, a fairly spacious room with a door should suffice. If you are a parent and need to keep tabs on your children constantly, you might want an open space that is always within the vicinity of them. Or if your job requires you to meet with people frequently, it wouldn’t hurt to have the office near the entrance.
Once you’ve chosen a space in your home that you can call an office, list out what you need. To start, you’ll likely need a computer and telephone. If your work involves graphic design, it would be a good idea to add both a small desk for the computer and a larger table for art. Counselors and consultants will need spacious file cabinets for storing client records. Take some time to brainstorm all of the ways in which you plan to utilize the home office.
Your office should be in a space with lots of natural light. If this is somehow a tall task, start by adding overhead LED lights that will illuminate the work area. Take it a step further by adding desk lamps and floor lamps that concentrate lighting on your workspace.
Lastly, make sure you don’t use your budget mostly on office décor. Use it on things such as a sturdy desk with ample work space, a chair that won’t ruin your back, or even a rolling ladder for access to upper storage.
